SHE TOOK IT FROM THERE / © 2024 Mark Hamby
And she said “Loneliness is underrated; why don’t you give it a try?”
It was a cold beginning, a little stick in the eye.
And I said, “I could really use the company, if it’s all the same to you.”
It was a real Hail Mary, the best I could do.
And she took it from there
Opened the skies to the blue of her eyes,
And the rush of the air from the eye of the storm
Where the breezes were warm with the smell of her hair…
And she said, “Don’t believe a thing I tell you; it’s just a story for now.
It’s bound to turn out better, if you don’t ask me how.”
And I said, “Hold that thought ‘til morning; the coffee’s there on the shelf.
If you’re awake before me, feel free to make it yourself.”
And she took it from there…
Any chance you take it. Any rule you break it.
Any tune you fake it right from the start.
And she said, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder, at least for three or four days.
But then the heart gets restless, in the usual ways.”
And I said, “How we gonna split the winnings, the way they’re stacked on your side?
I guess it really doesn’t matter, when it’s all cut and dried.”
And she took it from there…
