EARS OF A SPIRIT / © Mark Hamby 2024
The ramshackle building stands close to the sea
An eternity observing, the elements serving
A message from heaven and hell
Who can tell what made the children grow up as they had
A trifle sad to think on, to sit back and drink on
The memories carry away
Far away… today
And here are the paintings that fell to the floor
Stacked in the doorway, forgotten and left there alone
And here are the footsteps that passed through the hall
Echoes that fall on the ears of a spirit nearby
No one to cry, or recall
When did your mother give birth to a child
Your father smiled to greet you, he wanted to weep for you
Watching you stumble and fall
He didn’t know what made the children look out to the sea
The divinity of timing, the fortunes of finding
A man, a woman, a child
Running wild
And here are the paintings that fell to the floor…
My house, my home, I leave alone
Out of the shadows
Rubbing my eyes in the sun
What to become
